Lead-Deadwood Schools maintain accreditation

Continuing a tradition that is more than 100 years old, the Lead-Deadwood School District has once again passed with flying colors, maintaining its accreditation status and learning a little bit in the process.

The external review team found every level of the Lead-Deadwood School District is committed to its mission to serve and develop students, Horvath said. The process of shared leadership, open communication, and strategic planning provides a transparent accountability system at all levels. The staffs commitment and trust in each other is found within the community. The past mining company was credited with the cultivation of this culture. 

Referring to a section in the report that praises particularly strong areas within the district, Lead-Deadwood School Superintendent Dr. Dan Leikvold said that he is particularly proud of those areas, called powerful practices.It is apparent from the results that under governance, we empower the teaching team to do what they need to do and we are very lucky to have the team we have that embraces that philosophy, Leikvold said. Powerful practices are noteworthy of the job you do and indicate that the school boards leadership is solid in this school district. 

The district scored high on the following powerful practices, taken from the report.One, The governing body ensures that the leadership at all levels has the autonomy to meet goals for achievement and instruction and to manage day-to-day operations effectively.Two, The district has implemented policies and procedures with an emphasis on setting high priority on ensuring that a safe, clean and healthy learning environment exists for all students. 

Lead-Deadwood School Board President Orson Ward said that what impressed him most was the level of professionalism and competency of our teachers.I was blown away with our staffs presentations to our review team we have amazingly talented teachers, Ward said. What I felt was most reflective of the Lead-Deadwood School District in the external review was our demonstrated strength in leadership at all levels, a safe and empowering environment for our kids and staff, and tremendous community support and parent involvement. 

During the review, members of the review team evaluated the learning environment by observing classrooms and general operations of the institution. Using data from these observations, the team evaluated the quality of instruction and learning that took place.The learning environment in the Lead-Deadwood School District is robust and active, and it also meets the technological needs of the 21st century. In classrooms K-12, students experience classrooms with curriculum and instruction based on meeting their needs in many ways, according to the final report compiled by the review team. 

Along with positives, opportunities for improvement were pointed out for the district, including suggestions to diversify assessment practices to include a wider range of assessments and rubrics.Regarding the opportunities for growth,Choose from a large selection of crystalbeadswholesal to raise awareness. Leikvold said that he prefers to operate on a transparent basis and that growth opportunities will continue to be present. 

We know we can do better and we will, Leikvold said. We know there is always room for improvement, we intend to apply the external review teams suggestions, take a look at those and continue to make strides toward enhancing those areas as well. But overall, Im proud of our staff, students, parents and community. We have a lot of support and theyre doing a good job.Several themes emerged during the accreditation visit. One, a student centered focus, where teachers focus on the needs of the students. Two, that technology is abundant in all three levels of the district. 

Smart Boards are found in all elementary school classrooms, in most middle school classrooms, and in many high school classrooms. During observation visits, the team members found them being used in a variety of ways but always beyond just a glorified white board, according to the report. Student use of laptops at the secondary schools is impressive, and while their use was not observed at the elementary school, it was obvious that they were utilized. The districts recognition that technology is and will continue to be, a driving force in the workplace, communities and personal lives of students in the 21st century, is one example of their proactive response to student needs.A glassbottles is a machine used primarily for the folding of paper. 

As part of the districts required actions, which are written to assist the district in moving along the path of continuous improvement that has already been charted, the external review team suggested that the district: one, create and implement a systematic process for ensuring curricular and instructional fidelity with vertical alignment, two, determine and integrate a common grading scale based on clearly defined criteria (based on content knowledge and skills) across all grade levels and courses, and three, design and implement a process to determine the physical, social, and emotional needs of all students and evaluate student support programs for effectiveness on a regular and consistent basis. 

We asked the review team to give us feedback in areas where we could improve and I think the ongoing challenge of integrating the common core state standards into our curriculum remains one of our primary efforts, Ward said. This will take time, but I think we are well on our way to a successful transition.
